The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has announced that millions of households across the UK who qualify for the Warm Home Discount will receive a £150 credit on their electricity bills later this year. This credit will be automatically applied to the accounts of those who meet the eligibility criteria.
However, residents in Scotland may need to apply directly to their energy supplier to receive the discount, as procedures differ regionally.
Currently, the Warm Home Discount Scheme is closed but is expected to reopen in October 2026. For customers whose energy supplier provides both gas and electricity, the discount might alternatively be applied to their gas bill, should they be eligible. It is recommended that households contact their energy supplier to confirm their eligibility and how the discount will be applied.

Importantly, the DWP has clarified that receiving the Warm Home Discount will not affect entitlement to the Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment.
Eligibility in England and Wales depends on several conditions as of 23 August 2026: the energy supplier must be part of the Warm Home Discount Scheme; the individual or their partner must receive specific means-tested benefits; and their name (or their partner’s) must be on the electricity bill. The qualifying benefits include Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit.
Residents in Scotland should note that the eligibility rules vary and should check with their local authorities or suppliers for precise information.
If an energy supplier has ceased trading, the regulator Ofgem will appoint a new supplier to customers. Those customers should contact their new supplier regarding their eligibility for the Warm Home Discount.
For the winter season 2025 to 2026, individuals who believe they were eligible but did not receive the discount should first contact their electricity supplier. Eligibility can be confirmed by a letter from the Warm Home Discount Scheme or notification from the scheme’s helpline. If the supplier cannot resolve the matter, the Warm Home Discount Scheme should be contacted directly.
Given ongoing concerns about rising energy prices, it is advisable for households to verify they are claiming all benefits they may be entitled to.
