Aldi Named UK’s Cheapest Supermarket Again, Shoppers Save £67 Compared to Waitrose

For the fifth month running, Aldi has claimed the title of the UK’s cheapest supermarket, with the average basket costing shoppers £168.30 in May. This German discount retailer, which has multiple branches including locations in Birmingham, continues to offer significant savings on everyday groceries.

In a recent analysis by Which?, 95 popular branded and own-brand grocery items were compared across major supermarkets. Lidl closely followed Aldi, coming in second place with an average basket price of £170.58 when utilizing Lidl Plus discounts. Without the discounts, the price only slightly increased to £170.66.

Asda held fourth place at £192.58, with Tesco (using Clubcard discounts) costing £196.88 on average. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s were next, coming in at £197.50 and £198.79 (with Nectar), respectively.

Waitrose was consistently the most expensive option, with the average basket priced at £235.49 for May. This marks a substantial £67.19 difference—nearly 40% more than Aldi’s prices.

Which? has updated its research focus, now separately tracking branded grocery prices each month, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their limited branded product ranges. This change aims to provide shoppers with clearer, detailed price comparisons across non-discount supermarkets.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized the value Aldi and Lidl offer: “Amid ongoing cost-of-living challenges, shoppers want low, reliable prices without the hassle of loyalty apps or fleeting promotions. Aldi and Lidl dominate in delivering everyday value, reflecting a permanent shift in shopping habits. Choosing the right supermarket can save shoppers up to 40% on essential items simply by switching where they shop weekly."
