Aldi and Tesco Reveal Essential Tips for Storing Bananas to Extend Freshness

Aldi and Tesco have stepped up to share crucial advice for shoppers on how to keep bananas fresh and prevent them from turning brown and mushy too quickly. Aldi teamed up with food storage specialist Kate Hall to provide tips not just for bananas but also for preserving common kitchen staples like milk and potatoes.

Kate Hall explains, “We all know that not every bunch of bananas will be used in time for banana bread. But if you take just 30 seconds to peel, slice, and freeze bananas, you can avoid wasting them. Lay the slices on a lined tray to freeze individually before transferring to a resealable freezer bag. Frozen banana slices are perfect for making treats like banana ice cream or chocolate peanut butter bites.”

She adds, “This simple freezer strategy works with many fruits and vegetables. For example, slicing and freezing cucumbers lets you use them as ice cubes, add them to smoothies, or blend them into a refreshing sorbet.”

Kate emphasizes, “Freezing is an easy way to pause food freshness, reducing waste and stretching your budget. Many more foods can be frozen than people realize, and knowing the best freezing methods unlocks new possibilities for your meals.”

On Tesco’s website, they highlight the efficiency of full freezers: “To maximize energy use and cut food waste, keep your freezer full with frozen ingredients ready for use.”

Tesco campaigns manager Courtney Pallett shares a handy hack: “Think of your freezer as your best tool for reducing food waste. Foods like bananas and avocados that often spoil can be frozen to enjoy later.”

Tesco recommends peeling ripe bananas and freezing them whole or in slices. “Frozen bananas can be used directly from the freezer, ideal for thick, cold smoothies or convenient snacking.”

By following these expert tips from Aldi and Tesco, shoppers can keep bananas fresher for longer, reduce waste, and enjoy tasty treats from frozen fruit saved from the bin.
