A Mother’s Heartbreak: A Stern Warning to Reckless Boy Racers

The devastating silence in Ryan Sandhu’s bedroom is a daily reminder of a tragedy that no family should endure. His mother, Balbiro Kaur Sandhu, bravely shared the unbearable grief and shattered life they now face following the loss of her 21-year-old son.

Ryan, a Staffordshire University student and the youngest in the family, died from a catastrophic head injury after a reckless driver crashed into his Ford Fiesta on Birmingham’s Aston Expressway just after midnight on June 2, 2024.

The driver, 28-year-old Saqlane Zafar, unleashed chaos by weaving dangerously through traffic, speeding over twice the 40mph limit at 91mph, and weaving through closed lanes. Intoxicated by vodka and nitrous oxide, Zafar had rented a powerful Audi SQ7 expressly to “put it through its paces” and outrun time itself.

Before proceeding to prison, sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court, Mrs. Sandhu detailed the night that changed their lives forever. At 2am, police knocked on their door, delivering the unthinkable news, igniting uncontrollable cries and disbelief.

“No parent should live through this,” she said, “Our son was our world, our light — the thought of his funeral was terrifying.”

Mrs. Sandhu recalls the heartbreaking moment when Ryan’s pale, cold body was brought home—so unlike the vibrant personality they loved. The torment was deepened by Zafar’s friend, Muhammad Hamza, who fled the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase before crashing into a lamppost. Hamza’s denial and subsequent conviction for dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice added layers to the family’s trauma.

“Our lives have been shattered,” said Mrs. Sandhu. “Celebrations feel hollow without Ryan. His absence echoes in every room, especially his silent bedroom.” The family struggles to attend social events, and their relationships have fractured in the shadow of their loss. Mrs. Sandhu confesses that even religion no longer offers comfort, and that overwhelming grief forced her to step away from charity work.

Haunted by nightmares of that fatal night and her failure to save Ryan, she often wakes in tears. The tragedy has taken a devastating toll on her husband’s mental and physical health as well.

Nothing can replace Ryan. “We live for the day we’ll be reunited with him,” Mrs. Sandhu says through her pain.

Justice was served: Saqlane Zafar was sentenced to 15 years in prison with a driving ban of equal length, while Muhammad Hamza received four years and six months behind bars, with a driving ban exceeding five years.

This is a solemn message to all reckless drivers: the consequences of your actions ripple beyond a single moment and destroy lives forever.
