83,665 Younger State Pensioners Miss Out on £300 Winter Fuel Payment

As winter approaches and energy bills remain high, tens of thousands of younger state pensioners will find up to £300 missing from their bank accounts compared to older pensioners. This gap is due to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) eligibility cut-off for the Winter Fuel Payment.

George Penny, Home Energy Expert at The Solar Co., warns that 83,665 pensioners born between 22 September and 31 October 1960 are set to “just miss out” on this year’s heating allowance. The qualifying window closed on 22 September 2023, leaving these new pensioners without the financial support that could have helped them manage the rising costs.

The Winter Fuel Payment is a tax-free annual benefit designed to help older people cover heating expenses during the colder months. Payments range from £100 to £300 depending on age and circumstances. Starting from 1st November, approximately £25 million in support will be unavailable to this group of younger pensioners across England and Wales.

With colder weather ahead, George emphasizes the importance of making heating budgets stretch further. “Focusing heat where it’s needed most, such as the living room, can reduce annual energy bills by up to 37%. This approach alone could save households up to £395.50 based on current costs," he explains.

He also suggests heating just one or two main rooms throughout the day rather than the entire home, combined with simple measures like using draft excluders and heavy curtains to conserve warmth. For added convenience, investing in thermostats with timers or smart heating systems can help create comfortable warm zones without the hassle of manual adjustments.

These practical tips aim to help younger pensioners and others cope effectively with energy price challenges this winter.
