In the wake of escalating conflict following a US-Israeli attack on Iran, seven countries have shut their airspace, causing major disruptions for travelers. Israel, Syria, Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Bahrain have all closed their skies, and no flights are currently operating over the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Major airlines have responded by suspending services: Emirates has halted all flights to and from Dubai, while Etihad Airways has suspended operations in and out of Abu Dhabi. Qatar Airways has also grounded its fleet amid ongoing unrest in the region. UK nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Palestine, Qatar, and the UAE have been urged to register with the Foreign Office for safety purposes.
The first flights departing Abu Dhabi since Saturday have brought home firsthand accounts from passengers caught amid the turmoil. Sahib Matharu, 31, from London, described the tense atmosphere: “We were on edge the whole time. It was surreal. On the plane, just as we were about to leave, we were watching the news of another strike and wondering if we’d even be allowed to take off. The uncertainty was nerve-wracking.”

Other travelers shared mixed reactions. “Everyone handled it well, so we can’t complain,” said Tom and Jeanette Bird. Amanda Dawson from Worcestershire noted, “Some people panicked, while others didn’t bat an eyelid—a very British attitude.”
Parents Laura and Nikki, whose 19-year-old children were traveling, called the experience “petrifying.” Nikki reflected, “It just makes you realize how volatile this area can be,” while another passenger admitted, “It’s put me off going for quite a while.”
As tensions remain high, travelers are urged to stay informed and take precautions when planning trips to the region.
