This September, Birmingham invites residents and visitors alike to explore six hidden places that are not usually open to the public. Often reserved for locals, worshippers, or those with special access, these locations will open their doors throughout Birmingham Heritage Week, running from 11 to 20 September 2026.
These unique sites feature spectacular interiors, including stunning architecture, impressive statues, intricate domes, and colourful ceilings that offer a glimpse into Birmingham’s rich history and culture. Best of all, admission to these venues and events during the Heritage Week is free of charge.
One highlight is the Birmingham Municipal Bank, affectionately known as The People’s Bank. Established in 1919, it operated until 1976. The bank’s former head office, built in 1933, now serves as The Exchange, home to the University of Birmingham’s city-centre campus. From 11 to 19 September, visitors can explore a free exhibition within the bank’s former safe deposit vaults. The exhibition showcases personal stories, original archives, and oral histories that shed light on the experiences of employees, customers, and local communities. No booking is necessary.

On 12 September, a local history day features a guided tour of The Exchange building and a family art workshop. The Exchange is located at 3 Centenary Square, Birmingham, B1 2DR.
Another intriguing opportunity is to visit St Martin in the Bull Ring, where visitors can climb 50 steps up a spiral stone staircase to the Bell Ringing Chamber. Tours run each afternoon from 17 to 19 September, lasting around 45 minutes. They include explanations of English bell ringing traditions, the history of bell ringing at St Martin’s, and a brief demonstration. This free event requires no booking. Close to the city centre, the Birmingham Buddhist Temple and Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda offers a serene experience. Featuring large, impressive statues and intricate designs, the temple has been home to resident monks since its opening in 1989. The grounds include Rewata Dhamma Hall, where higher Buddhist teachings are held. Visitors can enjoy free access on Friday, 11 September. Although bookings are accepted, they are not essential. The Mondelez International Concert Hall in Bournville, originally opened by Cadbury in 1927, is described as a unique space. Initially seating 1,050 people with a stage accommodating a 200-person choir and an orchestra pit, the hall was refurbished in 1960, reducing seating to 912 for added comfort. It remains in use for company events today. On 12 September, visitors can enjoy free live music there. No booking is needed, but entry may be subject to capacity limits. Lazarica Church in Birmingham, the first purpose-built Serbian Orthodox church in the UK, will also welcome visitors. Dedicated to the medieval Serbian Prince St Lazar, the church was built by exiled Serbs and their supporters, with assistance from the philanthropic Cadbury and Owen families. On 12 September, presentations will share the church’s background. The event is free with no booking required, and a barbecue will offer burgers and homemade cakes based on traditional Serbian recipes. Finally, the Masonic Hall on Mill Street in Sutton Coldfield opens on 19 September. Originally the Town Hall, it was purchased by the Freemasons in 1903 and designed for use by local Masonic Lodges.
