£499 Fee Introduced for EV Charging Cable Installation Across Pavements in England

Surrey County Council has launched a groundbreaking initiative to support residents without off-street parking by enabling safer and more affordable electric vehicle (EV) charging at home. Through a partnership with Kerbo Charge, the council offers a cable gully system that allows EV owners to run charging cables securely across pavements.

This innovative solution features a specially designed channel with a zip-like lid, ensuring the cable is safely enclosed and the footpath remains free from trip hazards. After an initial suitability assessment via Kerbo Charge’s website, residents can apply through Surrey County Council and pay a subsidized fee of £499. While the installation typically costs over £1,000, government funding reduces the expense by more than half.

Keir Mather, Labour Party Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation Minister, emphasized the importance of expanding charging access: “Charging availability is one of the biggest barriers to switching. With over £250,000 in government support, Surrey drivers without driveways can now install cross-pavement chargers at over 50% less cost. Our £600 million investment is accelerating charger rollout nationwide, and the Electric Car Grant has already benefited more than 120,000 drivers.”

Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Transport and Economic Growth, Cllr Matt Furniss, added, “Home EV charging should be accessible to all residents, not just those with private driveways. With this scheme and over 500 on-street charge points, we are making EV ownership a viable and greener choice for more people in Surrey.”

Kerbo Charge Co-Founder Michael Goulden expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “We’re proud to work with Surrey County Council to broaden charging options and lower barriers to EV adoption. We look forward to helping many more residents transition from petrol and diesel to electric vehicles.”
