£300 One-Off Cost of Living Payments Available for Certain UK Households

One-off cost of living payments of up to £300 are being issued to eligible households in parts of the UK as part of a targeted winter support scheme. These payments are funded by the Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) Household Support Fund, which allocates a total of £742 million to local councils across England.

Each local council independently determines how to distribute its share of funding. For example, Newcastle City Council is providing cost of living payments of either £200 or £300 to households facing significant financial hardship. The higher £300 payment is available to households receiving Child Benefit for children living in the home.

To qualify for support in Newcastle, households must be experiencing “significant financial difficulty” and must have sought advice from one of the council’s designated Advice Compact partners. Importantly, residents cannot apply directly and must be referred by one of these partner organizations.

Newcastle City Council emphasizes that funding is limited and only one payment will be made per household. The scheme will continue distributing funds until it closes on March 31, 2026.

Across England, the nature and availability of cost of living support vary by location. Some councils distribute payments directly to households, while others route funds through local charities and community groups. Eligibility criteria and application processes also differ. For instance, in Staffordshire, eligible households can receive a one-off £300 utility payment directly paid to their energy provider.

This flexibility ensures that support is tailored to local needs but means that the type and amount of assistance can vary significantly depending on where you live.
