The UK government, led by the Labour Party, is introducing a groundbreaking 2p per mile charge plan designed to make home charging of electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible and cost-effective, particularly for households without driveways.
This initiative focuses on simplifying the installation of EV chargepoints for renters and leaseholders. New regulations will require covered car parks to include dedicated chargepoints, while consultations are underway to remove the current planning permission barriers for installing discreet cross-pavement charging gullies. These changes aim to ensure that EV owners can conveniently charge their vehicles wherever they live.
By expanding access to domestic electricity rates, the reforms could allow families to operate their EVs for as little as 2p per mile—the cost of traveling from London to Birmingham could be as low as £2.50. Additionally, the government plans to cut through red tape for EV owners without driveways by accelerating application processes and potentially saving drivers up to £250 in application fees.

To safeguard consumers, collaboration with Ofgem will aim to prevent landlords from charging tenants above market rates for home charging. Moreover, efforts will ensure that public charging infrastructure offers high-quality, reliable, and rapid connections to support the growing EV network.
A public consultation on this package will soon launch, inviting industry feedback to refine implementation strategies. The UK, leading Europe’s EV market in 2024 with a nearly 30% sales increase this year, is taking bold steps to address barriers like upfront costs and charging anxiety. With over 86,000 chargers nationwide, these new measures provide EV drivers with greater confidence and improved infrastructure to support their transition to electric.
