29 Counties in England to Avoid 26cm Snowfall as West Midlands Remains Clear

Within the next fortnight, heavy snow totaling up to 26cm is expected to blanket large parts of northern England and Scotland, according to advanced weather models from WX Charts. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model indicates a widespread snow event stretching across more than 400 miles.

Counties set to experience substantial snowfall include Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester. The snow is forecasted to hit areas from the Scottish Highlands down to South Yorkshire with significant accumulation.

However, not all regions will be affected. Several counties in central and southern England are expected to remain snow-free. These include the West Midlands, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Worcestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, and Bedfordshire.

Further south and into the southeast, counties such as Cambridgeshire, Oxfordshire, Kent, Essex, Surrey, Sussex, Greater London, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, and the Isle of Wight are also forecasted to avoid the snow.

Looking ahead to the week of Monday, 9 February through Sunday, 15 February, the BBC Weather team highlights that temperatures are expected to turn colder over much of the UK with Scotland experiencing the coldest conditions. Average temperatures will be near or below normal for most areas, with brisk easterly winds making eastern coastal regions feel especially chilly.

Despite the cold air, milder air masses could intermittently push into parts of England and Wales, particularly in the southern and southwestern counties where temperatures are expected to hover around or slightly above average.

Weather conditions will be variable throughout the week. England and Wales may see normal to above-normal rainfall totals, with some regions—especially in the southwest—facing heavy rain and local flooding risks. The northern fringes of precipitation bands will remain vulnerable to snow as they drift into colder air masses, primarily affecting northern hills and potentially reaching lower levels in parts of Scotland. Notably, northwest Scotland is anticipated to be drier than usual.

Residents in the affected northern and central regions should prepare for challenging winter conditions, while those in spared counties can expect more moderate weather as the week unfolds.
