If you live with one of 19 specific NHS-recognised health conditions, you may be eligible for up to £812 through the Department for Work and Pensions' Personal Independence Payment (PIP). This benefit is designed to help cover additional living costs caused by long-term physical or mental health conditions, disabilities, or difficulties with everyday tasks and mobility.
PIP is not means-tested, so you can receive it even if you are working, have savings, or already receive other benefits. The payment is split into two components: one focuses on daily living needs, and the other on mobility challenges. You may qualify for payment from one or both parts, with each offering two levels of support—standard or enhanced—depending on the level of help required.
Importantly, PIP covers a wide range of conditions beyond visible disabilities. Many long-term conditions recognised by the NHS qualify, reflecting the diverse ways health issues can impact daily life.

To apply, start by calling the PIP new claims line on 0800 917 2222 (textphone 0800 917 7777), available Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm. During this initial call, you’ll provide basic details about yourself and your condition.
Within about a week, you’ll receive a ‘How your disability affects you’ form (also known as the PIP2 form) to complete. You have one month to return this form, though extensions can be requested if necessary.
For a successful claim, it’s essential to accurately describe how your condition affects your ability to carry out daily activities and mobility tasks. Detailed responses will help ensure you receive the appropriate level of support.
