16 Counties to Be Buried in Snow as Two-Day Blizzard Hits England

A significant two-day snowstorm is set to sweep across parts of England next week, with 16 counties expected to be heavily impacted. According to weather data from WXCharts, a weather system moving over the Irish Sea will bring widespread snow to northern and eastern England, as well as much of Scotland, beginning on February 16 and continuing into February 17.

Snow will develop overnight on February 16 as a band of rain moving west to east collides with freezing temperatures. Areas including Suffolk, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, and the northeast will first see snow flurries. Meanwhile, southern regions will mainly experience rain, but snow will persist over Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire, North Yorkshire, and large parts of Scotland.

Many residents can expect up to 10cm of settled snow, with parts of Scotland potentially facing double that amount. The morning thaw will turn snow back to rain as temperatures rise, though snowfall is predicted to return later in the day as temperatures drop again. The snow will spread across the Midlands, then northwest towards Wales, increasing the likelihood of icy roads and hazardous travel conditions overnight, including the risk of black ice.

The Met Office also warns that wintry weather may continue throughout February. Predominantly cyclonic weather patterns are expected to dominate, bringing intermittent snow primarily in northern and northeastern areas. Although southern regions could get some respite from wet conditions, Atlantic low-pressure systems and cold air masses are forecast to keep weather unsettled, with further rain and strong winds possible.

Prepare for cold, snowy weather and exercise caution on roads over the coming days as Britain faces this challenging winter blast.
