£150 Cost of Living Payments Confirmed for Households on Four Means-Tested Benefits

The government has confirmed that households with people receiving certain means-tested benefits will be eligible for a £150 cost of living payment, delivered through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This initiative follows the expansion of the scheme last year, which aimed to provide additional support for families facing rising energy costs.

To qualify for the payment, claimants must be named on their energy bill by 23 August 2026. This requirement is essential for the energy suppliers to identify eligible households and ensure they receive the rebate. The qualifying benefits in England and Wales are Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Pension Credit.

Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh, appointed under a Cabinet reshuffle led by Labour Party Prime Minister Andy Burnham, emphasised the government’s commitment to alleviating the financial pressures families face due to increasing energy bills. She stated, “Families will be worried about their energy bills this winter and our focus is on giving them breathing space, as we continue to work to bring down bills.”

The recent expansion of the scheme saw nearly a million more families with children receiving the £150 Warm Home Discount last winter. Ms Fahnbulleh urged the public to help raise awareness and ensure those who may benefit check their details on their energy bills.

The government is encouraging eligible households to verify they are named on their electricity bill, especially if they have recently moved home. Those using pre-payment meters with keys or cards must ensure their household account is correctly registered in their name to qualify.

Eligibility hinges on several criteria as of 23 August 2026: the energy supplier must participate in the scheme, the individual or their partner must receive qualifying means-tested benefits, and their name or their partner’s name must be on the electricity bill. This group is referred to as the ‘core group’ by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
