13 Flights Cancelled at Birmingham Airport on April 13 Amid German Pilots' Strike

On Monday, April 13, Birmingham Airport faced significant disruption with 13 flights cancelled, primarily affecting Eurowings and Lufthansa services. The cancellations come as German commercial pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) initiates a two-day strike involving Lufthansa group airlines.

VC, representing over 10,000 German pilots, announced the strike in response to unresolved wage negotiations, including disagreements over pension terms. Andreas Pinheiro, VC President, expressed frustration over the lack of progress: “Despite deliberately avoiding strike action during the Easter holidays, no serious offers were made.” He added that Lufthansa management has yet to show a genuine willingness to negotiate, highlighting that the strike could still be averted if the employers present negotiable proposals.

Flights operating under Eurowings GmbH, especially routes involving Birmingham Airport (BHX), are also affected. Eurowings stated that Lufthansa is making every effort to minimize inconvenience for passengers amid the disruption.

In a related development, the Unabhängige Flugbegleiter Organisation (UFO), representing cabin crew members at Lufthansa and its regional affiliate Lufthansa CityLine GmbH, also called for strike action last week. The union criticized management’s ongoing refusal to negotiate a collectively agreed social plan to address staff demands.
