11-Year-Old Girl Courageously Recounts Terrifying Home Invasion and Sexual Assault in Birmingham

An 11-year-old girl from Birmingham has courageously recounted the terrifying night a stranger broke into her father’s home and sexually assaulted her. Staying at her dad’s house over the weekend as usual, she woke to find a man kneeling beside her bed in the dark.

The attacker, armed with a knife, covered her mouth and threatened to kill her family if she told anyone. Despite her fear, the girl found the strength to speak openly about the ordeal in the BBC documentary Forensics: The Real CSI, which follows West Midlands Police as they investigate serious crimes across the region.

“I opened my eyes, and I saw a figure in the dark,” she said. “He showed me a knife and said, ‘You better not tell anyone or I will kill your family.’” She described the months of fear and confusion, unsure whether to speak out until the threat became clear.

During the encounter, the intruder committed a sexual assault, coercing her into contact with him. In an attempt to assure her, he apologized several times before fleeing the room. Later that night, she woke her father believing she had had a nightmare, but only disclosed the assault after returning to her mother’s house.

Police investigating the case noted chilling evidence suggesting the attacker may have knowingly targeted the home, pointing to a child’s football goal visible outside.

The victim’s mother made a distressing emergency call reporting the assault, stating: “She’s 11 years old and told us someone broke into the house last night and raped her.”

Following a meticulous investigation, Stephen Jeffries, 35, of Northfield, was convicted based on DNA evidence and sentenced to 22 years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court. He was also charged with sexually assaulting two other girls between 2005 and 2024. Jeffries has been placed on the sexual offenders register for life and is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order indefinitely.

During police interviews, Jeffries largely refused to comment, exhibiting troubling behavior and repeatedly stating, “I should have died.” The judge described him as a “most dangerous offender,” underscoring the severity of his crimes.

Forensics: The Real CSI features this case among five major investigations in the West Midlands, filmed in close cooperation with West Midlands Police.
