Nearly 100,000 drivers in the West Midlands have received fines this year for speeding on residential roads with 30mph limits, highlighting the prevalence of speeding in the area.
Data obtained by BirminghamLive under freedom of information laws reveals that 99,416 motorists were recorded driving between 30mph and 39mph in 2025, leading to numerous speeding tickets. These infractions were likely captured through fixed speed cameras or police-operated mobile speed enforcement vans.
The findings come amid plans to reduce speed limits on over 25 roads around Birmingham, lowering limits from 40mph to 30mph in an effort to improve road safety. Council officials note that the majority of streets in the city will soon have a 30mph maximum speed limit.

Beyond the 30mph zone violations, the data also shows significant numbers of drivers exceeding higher speed bands. Over 61,900 motorists were caught driving between 40mph and 49mph, while approximately 28,400 were recorded traveling between 50mph and 59mph. Thousands more faced fines for speeds above 60mph, including some engaging in dangerous behavior on motorways.
Notably, 6,169 drivers were caught speeding between 80mph and 89mph, 929 between 90mph and 99mph, and some even surpassed 100mph. The highest recorded speeds included two vehicles clocked between 150mph and 159mph, underscoring the serious risks posed by extreme speeding on local roads and highways.
These figures serve as a stark reminder for drivers to adhere to speed limits and prioritize safety on West Midlands roads.
