Why a ’90s Birmingham Rock Star Spent Seven Months Working at a Midlands Brewery

Miles Hunt, the Birmingham-born lead singer of the ’90s band The Wonder Stuff, revealed an unexpected chapter in his life: working at a Midlands brewery for seven months. Speaking on Radio X, Hunt shared his experience at The Three Tuns in Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire, the oldest licensed brewery in the UK, operating since 1642.

After the pandemic lockdown, Hunt found himself lacking the energy and enthusiasm to return to touring. Rather than jumping straight back into his music career, he sought a change of pace and took a job as a drayman, delivering beer barrels at The Three Tuns. Despite staff curiosity about why a rock star would want such a role, Hunt embraced the opportunity, appreciating the grounded, hands-on work.

Recalling the experience, Hunt said he “loved it” and enjoyed engaging with the local community, which already knew him from the pub. The brewery, just a few miles from his home, gave him a refreshing break from the usual demands of the music industry.

A memorable anecdote during his Radio X interview involved DJ Chris Moyles mentioning how Hunt once gifted alcohol from a local brewery when performing at a family birthday. Little did they know back then that Hunt would soon become part of a brewery’s team.

Ultimately, Hunt’s seven-month tenure at The Three Tuns reflects a chapter of reinvention and a desire to reconnect with simpler, fulfilling work after the isolating lockdown period.
