Warning for Drivers Filling Up at Asda and Esso Petrol Stations Amid Soaring Prices

Recent data reveals alarming price discrepancies at petrol stations across the UK, with drivers at Asda and Esso forecourts facing significantly higher costs. An Asda Express station in Bothwell, Scotland, tops the charts this week with petrol priced at 173.9p per litre and diesel at 187.9p per litre, according to the price-tracking website Fuel Finder.

By comparison, the national average stands at 139.7p for petrol and 157.2p for diesel per litre. This means motorists filling up at the Bothwell Asda Express are paying roughly 24.5% more than the average UK petrol pump price.

A second Asda Express location in Strensham isn’t far behind, charging 172.9p for petrol and matching the diesel price of 187.9p per litre.

Industry experts express concern over these steep price hikes. Consumer advocate Martyn James criticized the excessive markups, stating, “There’s no need whatsoever for excessive price hikes.” He highlighted that while fluctuating demand can cause moderate price shifts, recent government regulations now allow real-time price transparency, exposing unfair disparities that disproportionately impact lower-income and rural communities with fewer options.

Edmund King, president of the AA, echoed these worries, noting inconsistent pricing practices within the same fuel brand chains despite uniform pricing on other products like snacks. “Some garages have increased prices too quickly based on the Middle East conflict, but others have been more restrained,” King added.

On the regulatory front, Juliette Enser, executive director at the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), reassured consumers: “We are closely monitoring petrol prices and will take action if there are signs of exploitation. We can fine petrol stations that fail to provide transparent pricing data, ensuring drivers can make informed choices.”

With fuel costs soaring and inconsistent pricing nationwide, drivers are urged to compare prices and remain vigilant to avoid being overcharged at the pump.
