UK Set for First Fuel Duty Rise in 16 Years, Costing Drivers an Extra £3,400 Over a Lifetime

For the first time in 16 years, UK drivers face a fuel duty increase that could add an extra £3,400 to their lifetime fuel costs. The planned hike has intensified pressure on the Labour government, with campaigners urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to reconsider the move.

In 2022, in response to the Ukraine conflict and soaring energy prices, the government introduced a five-pence cut in fuel duty. This cut has remained in place since, but plans are underway to reverse it gradually: a partial return in September and a full restoration by March next year.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance (TPA) highlights the financial impact on households. Currently, the average household spends around £36,285 on fuel duty and related charges over 60 years—45 years working plus 15 years in retirement. With the fuel duty increase raising the rate to 58p per litre, this lifetime cost is projected to rise by an additional £3,400, totaling £39,708.

Anne Strickland, a researcher at the TPA, warned, “Taxpayers are rightly alarmed at the looming fuel duty hike, given the already sky-high prices they pay at the pump. Many households are already burdened with tens of thousands of pounds in fuel duty over their lifetimes. Increasing it now would exacerbate financial pressures, especially on retirees and low-income families.”

John O’Connell, CEO of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, added, “Motorists will be desperately hoping the Prime Minister intervenes to stop this planned fuel duty rise. With prices at the pump expected to surge, the government should not be adding to the strain by raising taxes on fuel. The Chancellor must act decisively to reassure taxpayers and halt this increase.”

As the deadline approaches, the debate continues over the best way to balance fiscal needs with the public’s cost-of-living concerns.
