The ‘Middle Earth’ Birmingham Museum Offers Half-Price £4 Tickets This Weekend and on Mother’s Day

Nestled in Birmingham, Sarehole Mill is a charming historic site often credited as the inspiration behind JRR Tolkien’s legendary Lord of the Rings trilogy. Tolkien, who grew up just across the road from the mill, spent countless hours wandering its grounds as a child, drawing creative fuel from its peaceful rural setting to shape his mythical Middle Earth.

Today, Sarehole Mill is more than just a relic—it’s a vibrant museum featuring two working waterwheels and a special Woodland Realm forest area by the mill pond, showcasing unique sculptures by local artist Graham Jones. Visitors can immerse themselves in the very environment that sparked the imagination of one of literature’s greatest authors.

Normally, admission costs £8 for adults and £6 for children. However, as part of the National Lottery’s Open Week, tickets are available for half price—just £4 for adults and £3 for children—from March 13th through 15th. This special offer even includes Mother’s Day, providing a perfect, affordable way to celebrate with family.

A museum spokesperson said, “Step into the footsteps of one of the most celebrated authors of all time and uncover the origins of ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy. Sarehole Mill, a site that has stood since 1542, carries rich history, including connections to Birmingham industrialist Matthew Boulton who once leased the mill in the 18th century.”

Sarehole Mill is located at Cole Bank Road, Hall Green, Birmingham B13 0BD, conveniently close to Hall Green train station.
