Peacemaker Killed in Birmingham Pub Brawl Remains Unsolved After Nearly Two Decades

David Weaver, a 45-year-old father from Birmingham, lost his life after being viciously attacked while trying to break up a violent brawl at the Hare and Hounds pub in Erdington nearly 17 years ago. Known as a peacemaker, David stepped in to calm a chaotic fight involving up to 50 people, only to be savagely assaulted himself.

On a night in November 2008, David had entered the pub to sell raffle tickets when the massive fight erupted. Though he had no involvement in the violence, he attempted to de-escalate tensions as the conflict spilled into the street. Witnesses recall him signaling that he did not want any trouble.

Tragically, David was punched to the ground and then kicked in the head by at least three attackers. He suffered severe head injuries and never regained consciousness, passing away months later in hospital.

Despite the attack occurring in a crowded venue and being partially captured on CCTV, the perpetrators remain unidentified. Police conducted an exhaustive investigation, reviewing hours of footage and gathering over 100 witness statements, but fear and silence among locals prevented a breakthrough.

Repeated appeals for information over the years have yielded no definitive leads. Detectives believe the key to solving the crime lies within the community’s knowledge but have yet to receive the crucial tip that could bring justice.

Detective Superintendent Nick Walton, the case’s lead investigator as of 2017, stressed the importance of community cooperation. He acknowledged progress made when new witnesses came forward but admitted the identity of David’s killers remained unknown without more information.

David’s sister, Carol Weaver, voiced the family’s enduring pain and frustration. She believes David knew at least one of his attackers, but fear of retribution has silenced potential witnesses. Carol describes David as a non-violent man in fragile health who only wanted peace, earning him the police’s description as “a peacemaker.”

Nearly two decades later, David Weaver’s tragic death remains a haunting unsolved case, with his family still seeking justice and answers that only the community can provide.
