Paik Seung-ho faced a tough choice after dislocating his shoulder for the second time this season during Birmingham City’s clash with West Bromwich Albion. Despite medical advice recommending surgery, Paik made the bold decision to postpone the operation in order to continue playing this season.
The midfielder described the injury as more severe than his previous dislocation at Middlesbrough in November, explaining, “They told me it was worse this time with some damage around the shoulder, but I’ve recovered well and feel good now.” He emphasized that while he feels confident protecting and strengthening his shoulder, certain falls carry unpredictable risks. “It’s about luck,” he said.
A shoulder specialist advised Paik that surgery could sideline him for two to three months. However, backed by messages from supporters in Korea and his personal resolve, Paik had already decided against surgery before the consultation. “I knew if I did the surgery, I would lose the whole season,” he admitted, fully aware this would mean missing out on vital matches.

This choice reflects Paik’s dedication not only to Birmingham City but also to his international career. Having fought hard to regain his spot in South Korea’s squad last season under coach Hong Myung-bo, Paik couldn’t risk jeopardizing his chances of participating in the upcoming World Cup. “I’m not guaranteed a spot, so I need to keep proving myself on the pitch,” he stated.
Paik also highlighted the trust and support shown by Birmingham manager Chris Davies, whose faith in him has been instrumental during a challenging 18 months. “The gaffer has given me many chances and trust, and I work hard every game and training session to repay that,” Paik said. His performances have improved notably, developing a promising partnership with recent signing Jhon Solis.
One aspect where Paik has particularly excelled is goal scoring. Unlike his midfield teammates who have yet to find the net this season, Paik has netted four times, a significant improvement from last year’s single goal in the League One title-winning season. “Scoring goals and assisting are among my biggest targets because it’s the best way to help the team,” he explained. “Numbers show people how you contribute beyond just playing well.”
Despite Birmingham City’s slim chances of reaching the Championship play-offs, Paik remains motivated to finish the season strongly and secure his place on the international stage. “Being at the World Cup again would be a dream come true. When I was in Qatar, it felt like living a dream every day,” he reflected. “For all footballers, it’s the ultimate goal—I really want to be there.”
