Octopus Energy reveals that over 1.8 million UK households can save an average of £500 annually by adopting solar panels, as interest in solar energy rises sharply. In the last year, solar enquiries have increased by 27%, driven by households seeking to protect themselves from escalating energy costs fueled by global conflicts.
The UK is experiencing its strongest year on record for solar energy adoption, with certified low-carbon technology installations up 34% over the past year. In 2025 alone, more than 260,000 homes installed solar systems, bringing the total to 1.85 million solar-powered households generating their own clean energy. Additionally, battery installations have nearly doubled in the UK year-on-year, according to recent data from MCS.
Beyond reducing dependence on the national grid and enhancing energy security, home solar power significantly cuts household energy bills. A Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) report from the Labour government estimates that average homeowners could save approximately £500 annually by installing rooftop solar panels.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus Energy, emphasized the growing shift in consumer attitudes toward energy: “With the second major energy market shock in less than five years, homeowners are prioritizing security. The surge in solar interest shows that people now view their rooftops as essential in strengthening their financial resilience. By generating their own electricity, they insulate their finances against global energy crises.”
Keith and Elizabeth Stork from Norwich exemplify this trend. They installed solar panels alongside a battery and smart tariff, enabling them to save over £60 monthly on energy costs. Keith shared, “I charge the batteries during cheaper electricity periods and use the stored power during peak rate times,” highlighting the practical benefits of home solar technology.
