New Railcard Verification Rule for UK Train Passengers Starts This July

Starting this July, all UK train passengers using railcard discounts will face new verification requirements as part of a government crackdown on fare evasion. Under the updated system, travelers purchasing discounted tickets—particularly from ticket machines—will need to either scan their railcard or manually enter details such as the railcard number and their name.

The Department for Transport (DfT) expects these “simple validation” measures to save around £20 million annually in lost revenue caused by fraudulent fare practices. This initiative will be implemented under Great British Railways (GBR), a new public sector body set to take charge of Britain’s rail infrastructure and operations, anticipated to be operational by the end of the year.

Labour Party Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the benefits: “Using the railway will be simpler and more reliable under Great British Railways. When services are delayed, passengers should be able to easily claim the compensation they’re owed. These necessary changes will ensure people can claim Delay Repay compensation more quickly, allowing the industry to focus investment on freezing fares and upgrading trains and stations instead of absorbing losses from fare dodgers and fraud.”

Jacqueline Starr, chief executive of the Rail Delivery Group, highlighted that the government’s plan to streamline the Delay Repay service will enable all customers—regardless of where they purchase tickets—to submit compensation claims through a consistent and efficient process.

Jody Ford, chief executive of Trainline, added that focusing on improving the Delay Repay system will encourage more people to choose rail travel, benefiting millions of passengers across the UK.
