M&S Launches Innovative Initiative to Transform Unsold Bakery Bread into Frozen Garlic Bread

M&S has unveiled a new initiative aimed at reducing food waste by repurposing unsold bakery loaves into delectable frozen garlic bread. Shoppers looking to enhance their meals with fresh garlic bread can now find this convenient option in selected stores.

The retailer explained, “In selected stores, we take our daily-baked baguettes and boules that don’t sell by the end of the day, fill them with creamy garlic butter, and then freeze them. This allows customers to take home tasty garlic bread ready for the oven.”

Options include classic Garlic Baguettes, Sourdough, and even a cheesy West Country Cheddar & Red Leicester Garlic Cob. These frozen garlic breads, made freshly in-store, represent M&S’s commitment to minimizing food waste.

M&S stores in Birmingham and Solihull are already offering these products. Andrew Clappen, Technical Director at M&S Food, stated, “Our in-store bakers produce the freshest bread daily, and none of it should go to waste. We’ve found a way to extend shelf life while offering delicious and affordable products starting from just £1.”

Following positive customer feedback, M&S plans to expand this initiative to more stores and develop a wider range of products. Besides frozen garlic bread, M&S’s 25p ripe banana bags, which have sold over half a million units, are another example of their commitment to reducing food waste.

As part of its Plan A sustainability roadmap, M&S has pledged to halve food waste by 2030 and redistribute 100% of its edible surplus by 2025.

Catherine David, Director of Collaboration and Change at WRAP, praised the initiative: “Bread is the second most wasted food item in the UK, with over a million loaves discarded daily. Repurposing surplus bread into frozen garlic bread is an excellent way to reduce waste, stretch food resources further, and help feed families.”
