Midlands Schools Receive New Ofsted Inspection Grades Under Updated System

The latest Ofsted inspection results for schools across the West Midlands have been released, revealing a significant shift in how educational institutions are assessed. Following a major overhaul, Ofsted has replaced its traditional single-word ratings with a more detailed evaluation system.

This change comes after concerns that the previous grading approach—using labels such as ‘outstanding’ or ‘inadequate’—did not always accurately represent a school’s overall performance. Many headteachers expressed that an ‘inadequate’ rating could unfairly damage reputations, even if only certain aspects of the school required improvement.

Under the new system, schools are assessed across multiple specific categories designed to provide a fuller picture for parents and stakeholders. These categories include achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; inclusion; leadership and governance; personal development and wellbeing; and post-16 provision or early years.

Each of these areas receives a rating that ranges from ‘exceptional’ to ‘urgent improvement,’ enabling inspectors to highlight both strengths and areas needing attention more precisely.

Recent inspection reports for two West Midlands schools illustrate this approach. Smith’s Wood Academy in Birmingham was rated as meeting the ‘expected standard’ in four categories but was flagged as needing improvement in achievement and curriculum and teaching. Meanwhile, Leamore Primary School in Walsall received ‘expected standard’ ratings in six areas and achieved a ‘strong standard’ in its early years provision, reflecting a positive overall assessment.

This nuanced grading framework aims to support schools in identifying targeted improvements and provides parents with clearer, more balanced information about school performance.
