John Eustace Set to Prove a Point Against Former Club Birmingham City

Chris Davies didn’t shy away from confronting the mounting pressure on his Birmingham City squad during Thursday’s press conference. While carefully avoiding the phrase ‘must-win,’ the Blues manager made it clear that a significant victory is urgently needed. Without it, any hopes of a play-off push this season will likely be abandoned.

Many Blues supporters have already given up on a top-six finish. Too many stumbles have left their play-off path congested, making the prospect of a late surge seem almost impossible. Even gathering 19 points from the last eight games might not suffice, given the fierce competition this campaign.

Meanwhile, Derby County face no such hurdle. Under the guidance of their former Blues boss John Eustace, the Rams have surpassed all expectations and currently lie just three points shy of sixth place.

Eustace’s managerial journey has been a remarkable comeback story since Knighthead’s harsh decision to sack him over two years ago. After a stint at Blackburn Rovers, where he nearly clinched promotion, he took over Derby last season and quickly steadied their ship, steering them clear of relegation.

Leigh Curtis, DerbyshireLive’s Rams correspondent, speaks highly of Eustace’s abilities. “He’s criminally underrated at this level,” Curtis says. “He knows how to win. The progress we’ve seen this season is a testament to his work.”

The summer goals for Derby were stability and gradual improvement, not an immediate top-six challenge. Yet under Eustace’s leadership, the team has evolved significantly. From a pragmatic, defense-first approach relying on a five-man backline, Derby now flourish in a more attacking 4-2-3-1 formation. Standout performances like the 5-0 demolition of Bristol City highlight their growing offensive threat and effectiveness on the counter-attack.

Curtis expects the club’s ambitions to rise even further with the right player reinforcements during the next transfer window. “Once Eustace gets the squad he envisions, Derby could reach new heights,” he adds.

For both Derby and Birmingham, the ultimate goal remains promotion to the Premier League. However, it is Derby, led by Eustace, who are genuinely in the race this season. Whether they can secure play-off glory remains uncertain, but if Eustace’s side ultimately dashes Blues’ promotion dreams, it will sting. Knighthead’s decision to dismiss him, based on doubts about his ability to lead Birmingham to the Premier League, looks increasingly questionable considering the success he has forged at Derby.
