‘I’ve Solved Rape Cases for a Living, and This Was the Worst One I Have Ever Seen’

Detectives have described a brutal rape committed by a businessman against a sex worker in a West Midlands car park as one of the most violent cases they have ever encountered.

Simon Tang, 56, was sentenced to 12 and a half years in prison at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday, March 23. The attack took place near a car park on Birmingham Street in Walsall on May 5 last year.

During the assault, Tang repeatedly struck the victim with a baseball bat he had retrieved from the boot of his car, inflicting severe bruising to her head and legs. Despite the trauma, the victim showed remarkable bravery by reporting the crime to the police.

Tang, who resides on Weoley Castle Road in Birmingham, was found guilty of two counts of rape, possession of an offensive weapon, and actual bodily harm. In addition to his prison sentence, he will remain on the Sexual Offender Register for life and serve an extended license period after his release.

DS Morgan Colley, leading the investigation, commented: “This is one of the most violent rapes I have investigated in my career. The victim, a sex worker, demonstrated incredible fortitude throughout this difficult process. We take all reports of abuse seriously and work tirelessly to ensure justice is served.”

She added, “The victim’s courage during the trial was clear, and thanks to her strength, her attacker is now behind bars serving a significant sentence.”
