I Compared Cadbury Mini Eggs with Morrisons, Asda, M&S, Aldi, and Lidl – Here’s the Surprising Winner

Cadbury Mini Eggs are a beloved Easter delicacy, known for their pastel-colored shells and smooth milk chocolate centers. For me, a big bag of Mini Eggs alongside a Cadbury Creme Egg tops any Easter haul. However, with prices steadily climbing—now around £2.00 for a small bag—it’s worth exploring whether supermarket own-brand alternatives can offer good value without compromising on taste.

I tested Mini Egg versions from Morrisons, Asda, Marks & Spencer (M&S), Aldi, and Lidl, to see how they compare with the iconic Cadbury original. Unfortunately, Tesco and Sainsbury’s didn’t stock their own versions at the time of purchase.

Starting with the benchmark, Cadbury Mini Eggs weighed 74g and cost £2.00, reduced to £1.75 with a Nectar offer at Sainsbury’s. As expected, the eggs impressed with their vibrant pastel shells that provide a satisfyingly crunchy bite followed by deliciously creamy chocolate. I’d rate them a perfect 5/5.

Morrisons’ “Crackin’ Up Mini Chocolate Eggs” came in an 80g bag for £1.00, the cheapest option. Visually, the eggs featured a mottled pastel look, but with only white, yellow, and purple hues. Unfortunately, the taste was off-putting with a strange flavor and unpleasant aftertaste, landing a 0/5 in my book.

Asda’s Easter Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs, also 80g, cost £1.12. These closely resembled Cadbury’s in appearance, delivering a crunchy shell with a sweet and pleasing chocolate flavor. Given the affordable price and quality, I awarded Asda a full 5/5.

M&S offered 90g of “Speckled Eggs” for £1.75, just slightly less than Cadbury’s per bag. The eggs were notably larger and had bright, attractive colors. The shell was crunchier than I preferred and a bit too hard, though the chocolate inside was tasty. A respectable 3/5 from me.

At Aldi, a 74g bag of Choceur Mini Chocolate Eggs cost just 99p, matching the lowest price. They bore a strong resemblance to Cadbury’s with slightly more vivid coloring. The crunchy shell was sweet, but unfortunately, like Morrisons, the chocolate left a strange lingering aftertaste. Considering price, I gave them 2/5.

Finally, Lidl’s Mister Choc Mini Eggs were 80g for 99p. These eggs had lovely pastel tones and a smooth feel. The shell was crunchy yet tolerable, with a pleasant chocolate flavor. Not perfect, but better than most own-brand rivals, earning 4/5.

Summary of Scores:

  • Cadbury Mini Eggs: 5/5
  • Asda Easter Milk Chocolate Mini Eggs: 5/5
  • Lidl Mister Choc Mini Eggs: 4/5
  • Marks & Spencer Speckled Eggs: 3/5
  • Aldi Choceur Mini Chocolate Eggs: 2/5
  • Morrisons Crackin’ Up Mini Chocolate Eggs: 0/5

In conclusion, while Cadbury Mini Eggs remain unmatched for their signature sweetness and crunchy shell, Asda comes surprisingly close with excellent quality at a lower price. Lidl also offers a compelling alternative. I’ll continue to indulge in Cadbury at Easter, but I won’t hesitate to grab Asda’s version for a budget-friendly treat. Morrisons, however, needs to rethink their recipe—good names alone can’t mask a bad taste.
