Full List of Birmingham Roads Receiving New Average Speed Cameras as First Installations Begin

Birmingham is rolling out the first of a new set of average speed cameras aimed at improving road safety across the city. As part of a comprehensive safety campaign, six major routes have been selected for camera installation to help reduce speeding and save lives.

Installation has begun on the A45 Coventry Road, extending from Berkley Road to Bordesley Middleway. Drivers will soon see new signage alerting them to the upcoming presence of average speed cameras, allowing time to adjust before enforcement goes live.

Following the Coventry Road rollout, work will progress to the other five routes over the coming weeks and months. These new cameras will complement existing average speed systems already in place on some of Birmingham’s busiest roads, enhancing safety coverage throughout the city.

Alongside the expanded camera network, the city council has also reduced speed limits from 40mph to 30mph on 27 major roads as part of the same safety drive. Residents are urged to adhere closely to these new limits to avoid fines and penalty points.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the council’s commitment: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised action, and this is it. These six new average speed camera locations will help make our roads safer. There is no excuse for dangerous driving. We want to stop reckless motorists who endanger lives, particularly on roads like the Coventry Road where too many tragedies have occurred. Our message is clear: Slower is safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives. This initiative is about safety, not revenue.”

Chief Constable Craig Guildford of West Midlands Police expressed his support as well, noting, “I fully back this initiative, which aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our roads.”

With these new measures, Birmingham is taking significant steps to protect all road users and create a safer city environment.
