Foreign Office Urges UK Tourists in Saudi Arabia to Stay Indoors Amid Missile Threats

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has revised its travel guidance for Saudi Arabia amid escalating tensions in the Gulf region. With ongoing conflict involving Iran, the USA, and Israel, the FCDO now advises travelers to exercise heightened caution, particularly in the Eastern and Riyadh provinces.

On Tuesday, March 17, the FCDO issued updated advice warning of continued missile and drone attacks targeting these areas. The office highlights the risk of shrapnel from intercepted missiles and drones, which could lead to injuries and disrupt daily life.

British nationals in Saudi Arabia are urged to stay indoors and avoid windows when advised to seek shelter or take cover. Safe locations include interior stairwells or rooms with minimal external walls or windows. Travelers should closely follow local authorities’ instructions, as risk levels may vary by region.

This warning coincides with recent developments in the region. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed the death of its chief, Ali Larijani, in an airstrike claimed by Israel. The council described Larijani as a “martyr” who gave his life for Iran and the Islamic Revolution. In response, Iran’s army chief Amir Hatami has threatened “decisive and regrettable” retaliation.

The situation remains volatile, prompting the FCDO to urge all British nationals in Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
