Foreign Office Lists 14 Countries as No-Go Zones for UK Tourists Amid Global Security Risks

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has warned UK nationals against traveling to 14 countries, urging those currently there to leave immediately. Among 226 countries and territories with foreign travel advice, 76 contain no-go zones due to safety concerns, and 14 are designated as complete no-travel zones.

The travel advisories span multiple continents—including Europe, Africa, and Asia—and respond to ongoing geopolitical conflicts and security risks, particularly the escalating turmoil in the Middle East.

Notably, the FCDO stresses the volatile security landscape around military and security installations and cautions travelers to heed local authority guidance and stay updated through both local and international media.

Key travel warnings include:

  • Afghanistan: The entire country is extremely dangerous due to volatile security and tense border clashes with Pakistan. Several border crossings remain closed, and British nationals face a high risk of detention with limited consular support available.

  • Belarus: UK nationals face significant arrest risks for activities deemed illegal by the regime, compounded by potential spillover from the Ukraine conflict.

  • Burkina Faso: The FCDO advises against travel because of terrorist threats and political instability.

  • Haiti: Current security conditions are volatile; British consular assistance is limited and not available in person.

  • Iran: British and dual nationals risk arrest or detention. Anyone currently in Iran should reassess their presence considering these dangers.

  • Iraq (Federal & Kurdistan Regions): Due to escalating regional conflicts, travel is strongly discouraged.

  • Israel and Palestine: Travel is at personal risk amid ongoing conflict, with disruptions to transportation services and risk of rocket and drone attacks. Travelers should monitor local conditions closely.

  • Mali: Unpredictable security issues, frequent terrorist attacks, and kidnappings have led to a total travel ban. Air travel from Bamako’s international airport remains the only recommended exit option.

  • Niger: Terrorist attacks and political instability following a recent military coup make travel unsafe.

  • Russia: Due to the ongoing Ukraine conflict and related security threats, the FCDO advises against all travel, highlighting limited flight options and government support.

  • South Sudan: Armed violence, political tensions, and unpredictable security risks limit consular support significantly.

  • Syria: Unpredictable security conditions and terrorist threats persist, with no British consular support available inside the country.

  • Yemen: Due to severe instability, all travel is forbidden. British diplomatic staff have been withdrawn, and evacuation support is unavailable.

The FCDO emphasizes that many of these regions pose severe risks of terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict, and unstable political climates. UK nationals are advised to follow official guidance carefully, avoid risky areas, and prioritize their safety.
