Flats Plan for Historic Walsall Hospital Building

A historic building at Walsall Manor Hospital is set to be transformed into 14 modern one-bedroom flats under new development plans. The former Governors House, a Grade II Listed structure with deep roots dating back to 1899, was once the Board of Guardians’ Office for the Walsall Union Workhouse. It played a key administrative and residential role for the workhouse and later the hospital.

Developer Na Property Estate Ltd has submitted proposals to Walsall Council to convert the derelict property into residential units, including plans for a loft conversion that respects the building’s heritage. The scheme also includes 10 parking spaces, a bike shed, and a communal bin store to support sustainable living.

The building was recently auctioned in December 2023, initially priced at £99,000 but selling for £236,000. According to auctioneers Bond Wolfe, this represents strong interest in preserving and repurposing the site.

Agent Volta Designs highlighted the project’s conservation-focused approach, saying it enhances the building’s character while delivering high-quality homes that meet national space standards. They emphasized the development’s role in securing the future of this historic landmark, boosting the local area’s vitality, and setting an example of sensitive adaptive reuse in Walsall.
