Exact Date Birmingham Households Must Act By – or Risk Losing Their Vote

Birmingham residents are being urged to register promptly to avoid missing out on their chance to vote in the upcoming local elections scheduled for Thursday, 7 May 2026.

In this election cycle, all 101 council seats across Birmingham’s 69 wards will be contested. Each ward is represented by either one or two councillors, and every seat will be up for grabs in May.

Alongside the Birmingham City Council elections, voters in Sutton Coldfield will elect 24 councillors for the Town Council, while the newly established Frankley in Birmingham Parish Council will see elections for 12 parish councillors.

The local council has confirmed key dates and procedures to ensure voters can participate smoothly. Polling cards, which indicate your designated polling station, will be dispatched on Tuesday, 24 March 2026. Meanwhile, the final list of candidates who will appear on the ballot will be published on Friday, 10 April 2026.

To take part in the elections, residents must register to vote by the deadline of Monday, 20 April 2026. Anyone wishing to vote by post must submit their application by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, 21 April 2026. For postal vote applicants aiming to receive their ballots during the first dispatch round around Thursday, 23 April, the recommendation is to apply by Wednesday, 1 April 2026.

For those unable to attend in person, there are options to vote absent or apply for alternative voting methods. Detailed guidance is available on how to register, request postal votes, and other absentee voting options.

These local elections are part of a wider nationwide event, with 4,851 council seats up for election across 134 of England’s 317 councils on 7 May 2026. Additionally, ‘shadow elections’ will be held for two new unitary authorities set to launch in Surrey in 2027.
