British Gas Urges UK Households to Stockpile Three Days' Worth of Medicine Amid Snow Storm

As the UK faces severe snowstorms, British Gas is urging households across the country to prepare by stockpiling at least three days’ worth of essential medicines and supplies. The Met Office has issued amber weather warnings for Scotland, warning of potential power cuts and hazardous conditions on Tuesday, January 6.

The Met Office predicts travel disruptions on roads, with vehicles and passengers possibly becoming stranded. Rail and air travel may also face delays and cancellations. There is a significant risk that rural communities could become isolated due to the weather. Icy surfaces are expected to cause injuries from slips and falls, and untreated pavements and cycle paths are likely to be impassable.

British Gas emphasizes the importance of having essential items easily accessible at home. Recommended supplies include medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food and snacks, and extra blankets. Additionally, keep a torch, batteries, and a phone charger within reach.

For those who must drive in these cold and snowy conditions, British Gas advises keeping de-icer, scrapers, windscreen wiper fluid, and anti-freeze in your vehicle. Carrying jump leads is also wise in case the car won’t start. Before embarking on any journeys, ensure you have food, water, a torch, a phone and charger, and blankets. Regular vehicle maintenance is vital during winter: check your brakes, heater, tyres, and windscreen wipers, and keep your fuel tank at least half full.

The Met Office strongly recommends avoiding unnecessary travel in hazardous conditions. When driving is essential, they advise using dipped headlights, accelerating gently with low revs, starting in second gear to reduce wheel slip, and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles. Use a low gear when descending hills and brake only when necessary. If your vehicle starts to skid, steer into the skid and keep a firm grip on the steering wheel, avoiding sudden braking actions.

By following these precautions, residents can stay safe and better prepared for the challenges posed by severe winter weather.
