Birmingham Airport Cancels All Flights to the UAE Amid Middle East Tensions

Birmingham Airport is facing significant disruption today, with all British Airways flights to the United Arab Emirates cancelled and grounded until the summer. This comes as escalating tensions in the Gulf region continue to affect air travel, particularly routes between the UK and Middle Eastern destinations.

The ongoing conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel has now entered its fourth week, causing widespread closures and cancellations across Middle Eastern airspace. As a result, Birmingham Airport (BHX), which operates flights to the UAE and Qatar, is heavily impacted.

On Thursday, March 19, the situation intensified when former US President Donald Trump threatened severe retaliation if Iran launched further attacks against Qatar’s LNG gas facilities at the South Pars gas field—a shared natural resource between Iran and Qatar. Trump declared on his Truth Social platform that the US would “massively blow up” the entire South Pars Gas Field with unprecedented force should Iran continue its aggression.

He also claimed that the US was unaware of Israel’s recent strike on the South Pars field and stated that no further Israeli attacks would occur unless Iran targeted Qatar. Trump warned that any such provocation would result in a powerful US response, with or without Israeli cooperation.

The following BHX flights are disrupted on Thursday:

  • 06:10 – Doha Hamad (QR 035, Qatar Airways)
  • 07:40 – Doha Hamad (QR 036, Qatar Airways)
  • 18:45 – Dubai (EK 037, Emirates)
  • 20:50 – Dubai (EK 038, Emirates)

In response to the turmoil, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the South Pars attack, cautioning that the conflict could lead to “uncontrollable consequences” with global implications. Meanwhile, the UAE government described Iran’s retaliatory actions as a “dangerous escalation” in the ongoing war. In a further diplomatic move, Qatar ordered Iranian embassy officials to leave the country within 24 hours.

As tensions continue to mount, passengers traveling from Birmingham Airport to the Middle East are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on flight schedules.
