14 Countries Under Complete Travel Ban by UK Foreign Office

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has issued a complete travel ban on 14 countries, warning UK nationals not to travel to these destinations under any circumstances.

The countries currently on the FCDO’s “no travel whatsoever” list are Afghanistan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Mali, Niger, Palestine, Russia, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

These bans are largely due to ongoing conflicts, volatile security situations, and heightened risks of violence or terrorism. For instance, the FCDO highlights that Afghanistan is highly unstable, describing its security environment as “volatile.” Visitors to Belarus face a “significant risk of arrest,” while Burkina Faso presents threats from terrorist attacks and kidnappings.

In Haiti, widespread insecurity has prompted the advisory, alongside similar concerns in Iran and Iraq, where recent regional conflict escalations place British nationals at serious risk of detention. The situation in Israel and Palestine is also precarious due to regional escalation, leading to significant security risks.

Mali and Niger are flagged for unpredictable security conditions and increasing kidnappings linked to terrorism and crime. Russia remains on the list due to ongoing risks stemming from its invasion of Ukraine. South Sudan is marked for risks related to armed violence and criminality. Both Syria and Yemen are deemed unsafe due to ongoing conflict and unstable conditions.

Out of the 226 countries or territories with FCDO travel advice, 76 have at least some areas deemed no-go zones, but only these 14 countries are subject to an outright travel ban for UK citizens.

It is important to note that traveling to these destinations against official advice will invalidate travel insurance, potentially leaving travelers exposed to extensive risks without coverage.
