Twelve leading energy suppliers, such as British Gas, EDF, Eon, Octopus Energy, and OVO, have confirmed their participation in a new government-backed scheme to provide customers with a £150 discount on their energy bills. This initiative comes as part of efforts to ease the financial burden on households amid rising energy costs.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, that the government expects all participating suppliers to pass these savings directly to customers starting from 1 April 2026. This discount will apply to all customers, including those on fixed tariffs agreed upon before this date.
Personal finance expert Martin Lewis, known for his work on BBC and ITV, expressed cautious optimism about the scheme but emphasized the need for transparency and consistency in its implementation. He highlighted concerns that some companies might incorporate the discount into fixed tariffs early, potentially obscuring the real savings and complicating price comparisons.

“Some firms propose embedding the discount in new fixed tariffs launched before 1 April by pro-rating the savings after that date,” Lewis explained. “This approach lacks transparency, making it hard to verify the discount and compare prices fairly. I’m advocating for a clear, uniform implementation from 1 April.”
As of now, twelve suppliers have committed to delivering the discount from next year. Others, including Good Energy, Scottish Power, and Utility Warehouse, are awaiting further government guidance before confirming their plans.
It is important to note that the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, which underpins this discount, does not apply to households in Northern Ireland. Therefore, residents there will not benefit from this saving.
